Car Tips and Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What's the best way to check my engine oil? And how often should I do it?

Answer: Check the engine's oil level once a week with the engine off, on a level surface.

Question: Does it matter when I check the tire pressure?

Answer: It's best to check tire pressure when the tires are cold. When tires are hot, the air inside is also heated and expands—which raises tire pressure and therefore gives a faulty reading.

Question: Why should I maintain my vehicle according to my car manual's guidelines?

Answer: Vehicle manufacturers recommended specific mileage services to prevent serious damage and protect the owner's investment and the remaining warranty.

Question: Do all engines have timing belts?

Answer: No, many engines use chain drive systems similar to bicycles and usually do not require replacement or maintenance except for excessive mileage (which is determined by the manufacturer). Many engines use rubber timing belts that require maintenance and/or replacement between 60K to 100K, or serious engine damage may occur. Ask your mechanic or read your owner's manual for the manufacturer's suggested intervals.
